History Of Establishment Of Normal School

Normal School have been in existence since the 16th Century. A group of schools in French became aware and interested in preparing people for the teaching. The French concept of “Ecole Normale” was to establish schools to model based teaching practices thereby setting a standard or norm for student-teacher.

Normal School derives their name from the French phrase “Ecole Normale”. The brothers of the Christian schools first established these “Teacher-Training Institutions.” In French in 1685. The name of Normal School comes from the word ‘Norms’. Hence, Normal Schools are the “Teacher-Training Institutions” where scholars are moulded.

The Denish colonists first established Normal School in India 1716 at Tarengambadi, district of Tamil Nadu. William Kerry set up normal school at Bombay in 1802, in Kolkata in 1852.

In the year 1835 by courtesy of William Robinson, Inspect of Schools, a class was opened in English Seminary, Guwahati for the Normal Training. On 4th July, 1853, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan submitted a petition to George Aldrumost Millis of Calcutta Dewani Court requesting to establish one Normal School in Assam.

Consequently, A Normal School was set up in Guwahati. It was shifted from Guwahati to Jorhat in 1906.


Detail History of Establishment of Normal School, Nagaon

Normal School, Nagaon was established in 1953, At the very beginning, the head of the institution was called the Superintendent. The teachers of M.E. and M.V schools were given Normal Training. It was 3 (three) years course. Practical works were given importance. For all round development different social and cultural activities were performed by the trainees. Priority was given to ‘ Practice-Teaching’ to make them efficient teachers. The it was one year training course. The Normal School, Nagaon give opportunity to all the lower and upper Assam trainees to take their necessary course in due time.
